Instagram
post size.
1080 px wide, between 1.91:1 and 3:4 — so the biggest feed photo is 1080 × 1440 portrait. That is what Instagram’s help page says today. The 1080 × 1350 (4:5) most guides still quote is no longer the maximum.

What Instagram does to your photo
Worked out from Instagram’s image resolution rules: outside 1.91:1–3:4 it crops, wider than 1080 px it shrinks, narrower than 320 px it enlarges.
| You upload | Original | Posted as | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone photo, landscape | 4032 × 3024 | 1080 × 810 | scaled down |
| Phone photo, portrait | 3024 × 4032 | 1080 × 1440 | scaled down |
| Phone screenshot or 9:16 shot | 1080 × 1920 | 1080 × 1440 | cropped to 3:4 |
| Wide panorama | 6000 × 2000 | 1080 × 566 | cropped to 1.91:1, scaled down |
| Old website image | 300 × 225 | 320 × 240 | enlarged — will look soft |

| Common claim | What Instagram’s help pages say |
|---|---|
| The best portrait size is 1080 × 1350 (4:5) | Instagram now keeps portrait photos up to 3:4 — 1080 × 1440. 4:5 still works, it is just not the tallest. |
| Upload 4K so it looks sharper | Anything wider than 1080 px is scaled down to 1080. A larger file only takes longer to upload. |
| Small images are rejected | They are not — images narrower than 320 px are enlarged to 320, which makes them soft. |
| Each carousel photo can have its own shape | All photos in a carousel share one orientation: square, portrait or landscape. |
| Story photos must be 1080 × 1920 | A sensible size, but the help pages give 9:16 only for Reels. Other shapes are shown with a background around them. |
For hotels, rentals and restaurants
Post rooms in portrait
A 3:4 photo fills a third more of the screen than a square one. Shoot rooms upright, or crop a landscape shot to 3:4 around the bed or the table.
One shape per carousel
A tour of the room, the bathroom and the view must all share one orientation. Crop them all to 3:4 first, so Instagram does not choose for you.
Centre what matters
Your profile grid shows posts as 3:4 tiles,* so square and landscape posts lose their sides there. Keep the subject in the middle.
Edits are your call
Instagram has no written rule on edited venue photos, unlike Google or the delivery apps. If the same photo also goes on a listing, keep it honest so guests find what they saw.
* The 3:4 profile grid is how the app displays posts today; it is not described in the help pages.

What is the best Instagram post size?
Portrait 1080 × 1440 pixels (3:4). Instagram keeps photos 320–1080 pixels wide at their original resolution if the ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, so 1080 × 1440 is the largest a feed photo can be. Square 1080 × 1080 and landscape 1080 × 566 also work.
Is 4:5 (1080 × 1350) still the right Instagram size?
It still works, but it is no longer the tallest. Instagram’s help page now gives a range of 1.91:1 to 3:4, so a 3:4 photo at 1080 × 1440 fills more of the screen.
What happens if my photo is the wrong size?
If the ratio is outside 1.91:1 to 3:4, Instagram crops it to fit. If it is wider than 1080 pixels it is scaled down to 1080; narrower than 320 pixels, it is enlarged to 320 and will look soft.
What size are Instagram Stories?
Instagram does not publish a Story photo size. Its help pages give 9:16 for Reels, and 1080 × 1920 is the common choice for Stories. Keep text and logos away from the top and bottom, where the profile name and reply bar sit.
How many photos can a carousel have, and can they be different sizes?
Up to 20 photos and videos. They all share one orientation — square, portrait or landscape — so crop them to the same shape before you post.
